  1. The people reporting the news left out the whole clip of the young 4 year old boy saying "Im gonna have me a gun". The young boy was actully saying that because he would like to grow up and become a police officer. I think the reporters who cut out the whole clip of the young boy were trying to add effect to the story and to show that the area they were in was alot worse then it really was.-Andrew Potter

  2. The NAACP is considered an apporiate source for respone to this story because showing that the child has an amount of information that he/she could give to the NAACP or Police. And it is decribing what the source is adding to the promblem that the NAACP has agianst the story. Some may think its inapropriate but, others think its fine.Acorrding to the NAACP.-sam poisson

  3. In the video, the show boy saying " I am gonna have me a gun" but there was another part where he said something about being a policie officer. Maybe they did do it to make him sound racisit cause he was black. It's all a matter of someone else's opinion.

  4. James Gravier,

in a position of authority i would demote the reporter. the NAACP i do not consider an apropriate source for responce to the story, as they misquoted the child making it sound the kid wants to get a gun when he grows up making it sound like a disturbing responce to the driveby when the kid really just wants to be a cop

  5. If I had a position of authority in this news station I would repsond to the reporters error in a negative way. He took what a young kid was saying out of context and made him seem like a terrible person. Also, What he did was for the publicity of it all. He made what was a touching story of a kid wanting to be a police officer and turned it into a kid wanting to grow up to be a criminal. The NAACP is a good source to be responding to this story because of the way the reporter made this story look.

  6. I really cant credit the integrity of this news station and the reporter who was covering the story. I understand that all reporters and News stations choose which stories and which bits of the storys will be used in the actuall telivised news piece but to leave out the reason why this young man felt that he was going to own a gun is deminishing and slanderish. In leaving out the fact that the boy wanted to become a police officer he is making it look as if he just wants to be a gangmember or criminal instead of a wellminded young child. I think the NAACP was smart in interviening in this story, the news station did signifigantly portray a raciol steriotype in that all young african american males grow up to hold guns and become criminals, which simply is not true.

In a position of authority in this news station, I would probably punish the reporter in some way, either by suspending their pay or just firing them. The NAACP was right to respond, or else this story would just be fuel for another stereotype.

  8. This video is showing the falsehood of journalism where the little boy is saying how he wants to be a police officer but they cut so that it seems like racismn showing a little black boy saying "im gonna have me a gun". This video shows how they change the details so much in life that you never know exactly what is true or what was changed within the story.

  9. Was I given a position of authority, I would reprimand this reporter, suspend him without pay for about 2 weeks and keep an eye on him. This is basically a type of "yellow journalism" since he twisted the boys words by showing cutting off him wanting to be a police officer. This just heightens racial feelings that African Americans are "dangerous" and such by making it seem that even young boys want to be violent, while he was actually aspiring to be a police officer. Using stereotypes to heighten a story's potential and fame is despicable because it only hurts relations and the community at the cost of a few more one time viewers.

The NAACP would definately have good reason to be outraged because, as mentioned earlier, it plays off of a already common stereotype to gain buzz. While the NAACP has tried extremely hard to show that African American's are just the same as any other man, this careless news reporter helps reinforce misguided feelings by taking this boy's quote out of context as if all young African American boys want to kill.

If I were in a position of power as a part of this news station, I would be extremely dissapointed with the reporter who made this error. This error, while it might seem small to somebody watching at home, it is truly a big deal to the news organization. What the little boy in the video said was changed from an innocent comment on wanting to help people as a police officer to a stereotype-fufilling comment about having a gun when he gets older. I believe that the NAACP had the right to respond because the interview with the little boy was somewhat twisted to make it seem like African American children were brought up in a environment encouraging violence, which is not a true statement.

  12. Jailyn Kilgore,

I believe hat this video was steryo-typical because it was shown as a little colored boy saying that he wanted a gun, but tried to cut out the parts of him explaining why he wanted it. which was for a very gopod reason...he wanted to be a cop to protect people. But reality is that the person recording this wnated to make the little boy look bad, and make it seem like thats all he wanted. this will soon cause disruption. I believe that NAACP did have rights to comment on this interview because it had twisted around the young boys words and made it seem very steryo typical which is wrong !

  13. I think that this reporter was wrong for cutting off the video. The first clip of the video was made in a way that the little boy looked like he was going to grow up using guns for the wrong reason. The boy fully said he was going to have a gun because he wanted to be a poilce officer. The publisher of this video made other people think they were rasist by not telling the full story.

  14. I would respond to the reporters error by making him send out the whole video to show the truth of why the little boy wanted a gun. The NAACP is an appropriate source because the reporter made a cute little boy say that he wanted a gun when he grew up, making it sound like after the shooting he wanted to become involved in the voilence. The repoter did not include that the boy concluded with the fact that he wanted to be a police officer and presumably help people. This could make the reporter seem racist and I beleive the NAACP is condidered an appropriate source for a response to this story because the boys race had nothing to do with the fact that he wanted a gun

  15. To start off, I believe that it is important to show what the little boy said completely. If I were to respond to the reporter's error, I would be confused and uncertain of why the little boy said he wanted a gun, even after the shooting. I believe that the NAACP is considered an appropriate source for response to this story because the reporter made it sound as if the boy wanted a gun to hurt, when he actually wanted a gun to become a police.

If I had a position of authority in this news station, I would probably repromend this reporter. He only told half the truth which you can't do in a report because it would be considerd incorrect. The repporter made the boy sound as if he wanted a gun to harm people which was completely wrong because in the full clip, the boy said he wanted it so he could be a police officer. The NAACP is an approprate source to respond to this. The reporter made the colored boy look like a stereotype by cutting out the part that he wanted to be a police officer. This would concern the NAACP because it involves a stereotype on there race. They should be offended and rightly so making the NAACP an appropriate source to respond to this incident.

  17. This video included some racism when talking to the boy. They made it seem because he was a different race he just wanted to have a gun. However he really he was saying he wanted to become a police officer when he becomes older. *Kassidy*

During the interview, the reporter practically leads the 4-year-old into a response that includes him saying that he will carry a gun when he is older. It may seem that the reporter is talking playfully, but given the knowledge he has of a child's ignorance, he sets up the question like: are you going to stay away from guns. With that, he led the child into saying he will carry a gun when he is older. This makes the child and his family look bad (at least influenciually) and it is possibly supports racial sterotypes. The possibility it supports this is why the NAACP took interest into the report and could respond appropriately.

What that reporter did to the the young boy's statement was not loyal to his news station at all, and was unexcusable. Appropriate punishments should be given to him. In my eyes, as far as the man being fired would be appropriate, because he purposely only let that part of the clip on the news. It was misleading, the boy had a totally different message then what the news portrayed. The story that was on the news, not the actual story, completely stereotyped the young boy. The NAACP has all the right to respond to this story, because the news twisted around the boy's story to make the african-american boy look like a bad kid. Clearly, what the reporter did should have a consequence well thought out that he will surely deserve.

  20. I was surprised to find out that the reporter cut out part of the converstation. The little boy had mentioned that he wanted to be a police officer, but this was cut out of what had aired on TV. It made it seem as if the boy was crazy, wanting a gun. I believe the NAACP is an appropriate source for response to this story, because the reporter had made it look like the colored boy was insane. That's wrong, and could be considered racist. In conclusion, the error that the reporter had made is certainly wrong and not fair for the little boy, who now many might think is insane.

  21. I believe it was completley irresponsable of the news station to misquote a 4 year old boy. They portrayed him as a future criminal when what he really said was the complete opposite. What they decided not to show was the rest of the clip where he stated he wanted to become a police officer. The reporter who interveiwed the boy is clearly being racist and consequences are necessary. NAACP was a great source for this story because it got my attention. If they didn't make the misquote public I'm sure that the clip of the four year old saying he wants a gun would be all over the internet. His innocent staement would have been mislead into everyone thinking otherwise.

If I was in a position of authority the reporteer would be severely penalized and monitored so this will never happen again. I feel what the police did was unexcusable. The way they portrayed the kid as an individual who will grow up to be someone involved in gangs and shootings is terrible. They should not have showed the partial clip because they are stereotyping the young boy. The NAACP has a right to be upset with this, because what the reporter is saying is, "This kid is black so he will grow up to be violent." Why the reporter would do this is beyond me? He should have played the full clip and done his job by reporting all the news and not just some of it. Appropriate action needs to be taken towards the reporter such as penilization, or else things like this may continue. The world is moving on in so many ways yet there are still so many people with views that are fogged up by their own hatred. There should not be stereotyping still going on in a world with such advancement as people, we should all be better than that and once that seizes to exist the world will be a much better place.

  24. There is a huge difference between a boy saying,“ I’m gonna get me a gun!” and a boy who wants to grow up to stop the violence that he has seen during his childhood. The fact that he is an african american boy living in an area with quite a bit of crime shouldn’t change how people think of him, yet stereotypical thinking does have a large impact on african americans living in areas with crime. Some people think they are all part of gangs, cause violence or do drugs, when in reality a very large majority of african americans are good people who try to prevent these things. This reporter cut the part of the story that showed viewers that the boy wanted to do good in is community when he got older and left the parts that made it seem as though he wanted to create violence. Not only did this feed the stereotypical ideas around african americans but the reporter also betrayed the publics trust in the news. People rely on reporters to learn about the world around them and to report in a way the changes the news is unethical for so many reasons. The reporter betrayed the public, fed stereotism but most importantly hurt that little boy. You just cant create a story when it isn’t there, even if it does make the story seem more important.

The reason the reporter picked this child to exploit to get the dramatic story is because there is a strereotypr about African American people is that they are all horrible people who enjoy and or are involved in uneccesary violence. The NAACP helps support people when these streotypes are attatched to them and take action against those who encorage them so the NAACP would be a great sourse as a response to this story.

to answer the question, given a position of authority in this news station, how would you respond to the reporter's error? I belive what the new caster did was wrong and very risky. Also, he was being very biest by saying that little boy wanted to get a gun. In reality, the little boy wanted to grow up to be a police officer. In response to what happened, I would probably make an attempt to get the man fired, if not suspended from his job without pay.National Association of Colored Persons had the right to speak about this new cast because the little boy was white. NAACP was probably offended by what happened considering the man was white, and they wanted to speak their mind.

  29. I think that the reporter's mistake and the interview itself portayed the little boy in the wrong way. The entire interview should not have shown the little boy in that type of light, and should have included the boy's dreams of being a police officer right after he had said he will own a gun in the future. It is good that the NAACP responded to this incident to defend the boy and prevent people from seeing the video as racist

  30. I think that reporters error is outrageous. Thousands of people watch the local news nightly and therefore these stations have a large influence on society. There is a huge difference between the boy wanting to have his own gun and wanting a gun as a part of a job as a police officer to stop the crime he clearly has seen in his childhood. The reporter twisted the story and put it in a negative light, making the neighborhood and its residents seem even worse than they truly are. It also supports negative African American stereotypes.
I believe the NAACP is an appropriate source to comment on this error. The reporter made or attempted to make the African American community look more violent then it truly is. He made it seem although the little African American boy was taught and was going to grow up to be a violent man when really, he just wanted to stop the crime he so often sees. This was clearly a race issue and therefore the NAACP is a great source.

Given a position of authority in the news station, I would probably go as far as ending the reporters career at my news station. Literally, that changed the boy's motif for owning a gun from good to evil. He wanted a gun to use for good, but instead he is made out as a stereotype. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People did have a right, however they do have a reputation for getting into an uproar over certain things.

  32. Julia Gannon,

If i lived in the area where the shooting occurred, i would be outraged at the reporter's error. it makes the town that this shooting occurred in seem more dangerous than it already is, and makes it seem like the public is not planning on trying to stop this violence. the reporter showed the boy saying "i'm gonna have me a gun", but they didn't show the reason why he was going to buy it, and it was to be a police officer to try and stop the violence. i think the NAACP is an appropriate responder to this story because the reporter tried to make the report a negative issue, when the boy had said he wanted to be a police officer but they cut the clip. i think the NAACP is a good responder because they are able to comment on how this can be characterized as a race issue, and how they are portraying the young black community as violent and growing up in the same unruly world as their neighbors are. at the end of the clip, i realized that this is more of a race issue than it is an actual news story.

  33. This is a serious news report and it will affect many lives and familes, and the fact that a news reporter had the nerve to interview an innocent little boy to say cute things is crazy. It completely takes away from the seriousness of this news story. If I were the reporter's boss, I would give him a warning and tell him if it happens again, he's fired. It's unprofessional and innopropriate. Putting words into a little boy's mouth, telling him he wants a gun and that he isn't scared is creepy and uncalled for. I think it was appropriate to go to the NAACP because it was sterotyping the little boy, talking about guns and how he wasn't afraid of anything, etc just because he's colored. -Rose Tracy

  34. Honestly this journalism was a bit scandolous. But by design it appeals to the CBS network. CBS of course being a Democratic network and appealing to Democratic ideals/policies and one of those being the eventual abolition of weaponry. And the abolition of weaponry in the United States isn't a bad thing. Yes the child was misrepresented but was the overall message that bad? Was it honestly terrible? The message being; guns are bad and our current society tends to look upon guns with interest and admiration THAT'S THE REAL TRAVESTY. Not some nobody child that got misrepresented on a local TV network.

We believe that the NAACP would be upset because they edited the video to make the kid look like a wannabe gangster. You would think that in a modern society the news reports would be unbiased and just report the truth. If we were in a position of power, the journalist would suffer major repercussions. We wouldn't fire him, but we would suspend him from being able to report. He'd have to go through much scrutinization for each one of his pieces. It makes you think what other reports that we we have viewed are tampered with in order to get a point out. The odds are that most of them are...

If I were in a position of power at the news station, I would make whoever was responsible for cutting out the clip should be forced to issue a public apology and if they refuse, be let go from the station. I feel that the NAACP is an alright group to respond to this claim because I suppose the boy falls under their jurisdiction but I feel that they are inherently racist because they themselves only allow one race into their organization which makes them bad. If the boy was white, the grievance would be the same but the NAACP or any other race group would not speak for him but the station would still have to apologize.

  39. If I were in a position of authority at this news station, I would make the reporter send out the whole story, to show that the little boy wanted to pursure the profession of a police officer when he gets older, which would require him to own a gun. I would also fire the reporter because not only did he make the little boy look very bad, he also lacked details that a repot should have, like the exact age of the boy. I believe that the NAACP was a good source to have their input be heard, because the clip that was presented to the public was very stereotypical making blacks look bad, because a little black 4 year old was saying that when he was older he was not going to stay away from guns, but own them. By editing the clip to cut off the rest at this part leads the auidance to portray a bad image of the little boy, which on a larger scale can protray a bad image for blacks. What the audiance did not see would have completely altered the image protrayed by the report, because it is commonly known that police officers have guns, which would have made it completely acceptable for the little boy to state when he got older he was going to have guns.

  40. In my opinion the reporter should be fired. He was sterotyping against african americans and that particular town he was in. The reporter was trying to make it sound like the place where the shootings took place was worse then it actually could've been. To speak to the NAACP was the right thing to do because it is a racial issue. Would it be okay for a white child to say they wanted a gun? Would people assume it was for a good cause? This is feeding into the sterotype that people of color that live in the "hood" or bad areas, their automatically dangerous.

The mistake made by the reporter was a rather large one. The man clearly misrepresented the four year old boy. Just because he was an African American living near the scene of this crime, people might get the wrong idea. Also, the reporter left out the fact that the little boy wanted a gun when he was older for his dream of becoming a police officer. Through this mistake, the reporter implied that the black boy was insane. To black people, this would be considered racist. NAACP was probably an appropriate source for response because they're representing the African American boy. I would respond to the situation by firing the man that misappropriated what the boy's actual meaning was.

  42. Casey Parker

While the reporter did not force the child to say anything he misrepresented what was said. The reporter should be fired because he works for a news station, not a gossip column or chanel like TMZ. However, I have heard of editing misrepresentations before and I'm sure it is not that uncommon for a reporter to edit out part of a comment or take the comment out of context in order to display a certain perspetive.

I think it was appropriate for the NAACP to respond beause the report was casting the black child in a steriotypical light. Because the child was portrayed as if he wanted to be a criminal when he grows up it is feeding into the black "ganster" steriotype. While the same situation could have happened to a white child the report appeared to take place in a prodominantly black nieghborhood.

If I were in a position of authority in this company I would probably follow the typical convention for first-time offenders of journalism etiquette.
I believe this is appropriate because the reporter was purposely misinterpreting the facts to show his opinion. While the opinion (that guns cause violence among children) of the news reporter may or may not be correct, the purpose of the news is to report facts, not opinions.

  44. Ashley Moreau

If I were a position of high authority in this reporter's news station I would certainly fire the reporter. In news, incorrectly portraying anyone is unacceptable and the ultimate goal of journalists is to seek truth. I feel as though this reporter was careless in throwing together this story and made the little boy on camera look bad. While the little boy said "Imma have me a gun," he said this because he wants to be a police officer. By the cutting out of the second part of his response, the journalist made the little boy seem crazy and violent. I feel it was certainly appropriate for the NAACP to response to this video with concern. The NAACP is appropriate to respond this story because they represent this boy's society and they must of been outraged. They had the right to speak out about the reporter's unjust actions.

I think that the reporters actions were completely out of line and inappropriate. This child is only "3 or 4" and by him saying "I wanna get me a gun" was the only way he could express his dream of being a police officer. Since this little boy was African-American, the NAACP feels that it is there right to defend this sterotype that the reporter created through this child's interview.

American's are slowly growing up I think agianst sterotypical views on different types of people. 3 years ago we elected a black president. But no matter what you say you are going to end up hurting someone you just got to say it in a way that does not make them more mad then they already will be for example if someone is arrested for killing animals PETA will get mad. If gay marriage is aloud in Missouri Chrisitans and gay haters will get mad. You can not really win. But you want to make it seem like a bad or good thing.
